How Carbondale Arrests Become Records
Every Carbondale arrest starts a paper trail. City officers make the arrest, and the Carbondale Police Department writes the municipal incident and arrest record. If the person goes into county custody, the Jackson County Jail steps in. It opens its own intake and custody record. City releases sometimes note that an adult was transported to the jail pending a detention hearing. That mention still does not make one city release a county roster.
Carbondale is Jackson County's largest incorporated place, home to 21,857 residents in the 2020 Census. Southern Illinois University Police add a campus layer to this record landscape. City arrest records stay with the city. Campus records stay with SIU Police. Jail intake or discharge records stay with the sheriff, and booking is administrative intake, nothing more.
Where Carbondale Recent Arrests Appear
Start with official sources because they name the agency and record type. Jackson County publishes no public current-custody roster or county booking feed. Carbondale does offer an official release archive, while the jail, VINE, and court systems cover the later custody stages.
| Channel | Coverage | Photo status |
|---|---|---|
| Police releases | Selected dated city incidents | No booking gallery found |
| Sheriff and jail | County custody and records contacts | Request when available |
| Illinois VINE | Named-person custody status | Not a photo source |
| SIU Police | Campus 60-day crime log | Not a jail gallery |
| Local news | Selected stories | Images may be generic |
The city archive also carries notices that involve no arrest at all. Read each dated item before drawing conclusions.
Find Someone Arrested in Carbondale
A name search works best when you know the agency and the likely custody stage. Follow the source chain rather than treating one result as the whole record.
- Check the official Carbondale Police release archive by date and event.
- For current custody, call Jackson County Jail at 618-687-2292. Use 911 only for an emergency.
- Search Illinois VINE by name or identifying number, then check the facility and status date.
- Request the city incident record from the City Clerk and county intake or discharge records from the sheriff.
- Follow a filed case through the Jackson County Circuit Clerk and Judici.
A fresh booking may take time to appear in VINE or a release. The Jackson County booking-photo section explains the county-wide photo path.
Note: Match the name, agency, facility, incident date, and record date before deciding that two search results concern the same event.
Carbondale Police Arrest Releases
Among Jackson County municipalities, Carbondale has the clearest publication route. A single release can carry the incident date, approximate time, location, and facts credited to investigators. It may also list the adult's name and age, charge language, and transport to Jackson County Jail. The city stops short of calling its archive a full arrest log. It is no same-day feed. The mobile police-release view shows the current dated notices.

The official city page identifies the source and rehosts no gallery of people. Keep the post date with any fact you save. Keep the police attribution too. Preliminary claims can differ from the prosecutor's filing. And since the category mixes in other notices, its entries cannot be counted as bookings.
Request Carbondale Arrest Records
The city's official form routes requests to the City Clerk. Name the person, the approximate date and time, the location, and the exact report, arrest record, or image sought. If the city does not hold an item, ask which agency does.
Carbondale Police Department
501 South Washington Street
Carbondale, IL 62901
Phone: 618-457-3200
Fax: 618-457-3204
The Carbondale request form lists the City Clerk at 200 South Illinois Avenue and 618-457-3280. The first 50 black-and-white letter- or legal-size pages are free. Later pages may cost 15 cents each. Color, oversized, or other media may run at actual cost.
County intake, transfer, discharge, and jail-photo requests go through the Jackson County FOIA route. Ask for a fee estimate first. Do this when volume or format is unclear.
SIU's Separate 60-Day Crime Log
Southern Illinois University Police maintains a 60-day crime log, available online or in person. That log is a campus record, distinct from both the Carbondale Police release archive and the Jackson County Jail booking record. The SIU Police website is the official campus starting point.

The campus site lets a requester find the right channel before asking for a record. SIU Police lists Trueblood Hall, 1175 South Washington Street, Carbondale, Illinois 62901, and 618-453-3771. A crime-log entry alone does not establish county jail intake or release.
Carbondale Mugshots Are Conditional
The city publishes no official booking-photo gallery and states no photo policy. Illinois arrest-information law includes a photo only when and if one is available. Ask the agency holding the record for an existing, releasable image.
A police image and a county booking photo differ. So do a registry photo and a state corrections image. A news illustration differs too. Name the source and date each time. Juvenile confidentiality and other limits may apply. A generic image attached to a release is not a mugshot.
Note: Ask whether a photo exists, which office holds it, what exemption applies, and which file or paper format can be released.
Alerts Do Not List Arrests
Carbondale CivicReady notices and Carbondale/SIU Crime Stoppers at 618-549-COPS handle alerts and tips. Neither publishes a booking feed. Custody questions belong with the jail. Record requests belong with the office that made the record.
WJPF, KBSI FOX23, and WMIX also run selected area stories. Those reports may preserve a public narrative. Yet they stay incomplete and sometimes use generic images. Confirm an article through police, jail, and court sources. Never approach a person over an online repost. Never treat an unverified item as a warrant.
County Roster Absence Changes the Search
Jackson County's official sheriff page offers plenty: jail details, visitation rules, audits, and reports, plus a link through its sitemap to Offender Watch. One thing you won't find there is a current inmate roster or a list of recent bookings. Offender Watch tracks a registry. It cannot tell you who landed in jail after a Carbondale arrest, and a photo there should never be mistaken for a fresh booking picture.
Want news of a recent arrest? Call the jail first. Want a document? Write Lt. Shauna Taylor at FOIA-Sheriff@jacksoncounty-il.gov and name the person, the date, the arresting city agency, and the record you want. Illinois law requires arrest information kept in chronological order to be provided promptly, and no later than 72 hours after the arrest. A photo comes along only if one exists. That rule creates no live online feed, and it leaves juvenile confidentiality intact. If the office denies or trims your request, ask which legal basis it cited and how to appeal.
Carbondale Arrest to Court Record
A Carbondale case travels a set path: city or campus incident report, the arrest itself, county booking if the person is held, a possible detention hearing, then the court filing and its final outcome. The court's result is the disposition. Each office along the way keeps only its own piece of the record.
- Incident report
- The arresting agency's account of the reported event.
- Booking
- Administrative intake into Jackson County Jail.
- Custody status
- A current location or release state checked with the jail or VINE.
- Disposition
- The later court outcome, which may differ from the first charge.
The Daily Arrest Report explains why direct confirmation replaces a public county 24-hour feed.
